What's Really 'Hood?

The same creative geniuses at VH-1 who thought it would be a great idea to give Flavor Flav and that lamb chop look-a-like Tiffany Pollard reality shows think American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino should have her own reality show.

According to VH-1 Vice President of unOriginal Programming, Jeff Olde:
Fantasia has one of the most fascinating stories in show business, from her tough upbringing to her meteoric rise on the national scene thanks to American Idol. Her challenges from fame and her unwillingness to fail have combined to create a larger-than-life talent who appeals to music lovers around the world. So many people wanted to work with her on this, but Fantasia is now part of the VH1 family, and we’re so happy to have her.
This means he expecting some real 'hood behavior and high ratings. I don't think he'll be disappointed. Nothing about Fantasia is interesting. I'm not a fan of American Idol. I don't like her singing and find her about as interesting as a pile of peat moss. I'm sure there's going to be all kinds of 'hood-like drama jumping off at Fanny's crib.

On one hand you have beautiful, smart and well-educated black women like Michelle Obama and Desiree Rogers and then you have Fantasia. In spite of what VH-1 says, ain't nothing fresh, funny or original about reality show starring Fantasia. I won't be watching.

  1. Hi there!

I am sorry to say this but I have NEVER found anything interesting about Fantasia. If some sistas out there think it is inspiring that this young woman remained ILLITERATE after winning "American Idol" then...um...er... that's a problem.

I would like to see Fantasia find a mentor who can teach her a little bit about the importance of presentation...elegance...diction...and reading skills...braces...

I'm not bashing the sista's singing skills though...because yes, she CAN sing!

  2. hmm, sometimes there is a thin line between afro-classism and legitimate critique. this strikes as legit but predictably opens the door to less thoughtful commentary --> ms. trumpet. kzs

  3. I am not a fan of ANY reality show because I feel they exploit people's pain and life processes. However, I support Fantasia's development as an artist, mother and black woman.

Unfortunately, our obsession with class and personal privilege in this country has blinded us of the fact that there are millions of Americans (un)dereducated and still struggling with illiteracy in this country. The REAL problem.

Fantasia had the drive, commitment and courage to pursue her dream as well as cultivate her gift of song in spite of her limitations. Plus, the sista made a million dollars in the process. (More than most of us educated people can say.) She deserves support, respect and admiration for that in itself!

I certainly pray that God connects her with the right people that won't continue to exploit her and/or hate on her success. I wish Fantasia many blessings and much love! She is on a journey like the rest of us.

  4. Fantasia has been through alot but she won American idol, had a lifetime movie, and a televised highschool graduation. I think that's where it should end for her as far as free press goes. She's already shared her life story with the world. We get it. She does not need a reality TV series on VH1. I just hope Fantasia has a strong team behind her to keep her from being exploited for some ratings.

  5. Hallzie,
Thanks for your comments. I agree, Fantasia does not need to have a reality show. It upsets me to see how black women are portrayed on reality TV. Sure I know 'Basketball Wives' and 'The Real Housewives of Atlanta' are entertaining, but the rest of us are being judged by the way these women behave. Calling each other b*****s, backbiting and arguing over who slept with whose man/husband. It's very sad.
