For Now, Musharraf Appeases Cheney

On Monday, Vice President Dick Cheney paid a visit to our 'ally' in the war on terror, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. In just three short days, the Pakistani security forces have arrested a leading member of the Taliban in the border town Quetta, Pakistan. Mullah Obaidullah Akhund is said to be the Taliban insurgency leader in Afghanistan.

According to officials in the Pakistani government, this raid had been in the works prior to Cheney's visit but I'm not buying it. As former Taliban ally, I bet Musharraf knew where the Mullah was in the first place. This sounds like some staged attempt by the Pakistani government to appease the Bush administration.

It's no secret that the Taliban operates bases on the Pakistani side of the border. Amazingly, all it takes is a visit from Dick Cheney to root these people out. I bet they could find Ousama bin Laden if they were really looking for him. For Musharraf, it looks like he is doing his part to make the world a safer place but he doesn't want his country "bombed into the stone age". He's only our ally because there are no other options. Musharraf is in the business of self-preservation.

Unfortunately, the Taliban are like roaches, you kill one and dozen more appear to share their demented interpretation of the Quran, Islam and holy war.
